The winter chill is setting in. What better reason to either curl up with a book or attend a learning program at the Brooks Memorial Library.

Here is what's happening in the next few weeks before the holidays:

Bennington College Professor Discusses Lasting Appeal of Jane Austen’s Persuasion at Brooks Memorial Library, December 3, 7 PM

Bennington College Professor April Bernard will speak on the Lasting Appeal of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, on Wednesday, December 3, at 7 PM in the Library’s Main Room. This event is a Vermont Humanities Council First Wednesdays lecture.

In her final superb novel, Persuasion, Jane Austen combined social satire with profound feeling. Bernard will examine how Austen holds our attention and sympathy and why the novel continues to compel readers.

April Bernard is a poet, novelist, and essayist. Her most recent book is a collection of poems, Swan Electric. Her poems, essays, reviews, and travel pieces have appeared in numerous journals, including The New York Review of Books, The New York Times Book Review, The New Republic, The Nation, Newsday, Parnassus, and Vanity Fair. She has taught literature and writing at Bennington College since 1998. Her next book of poetry, Romanticism, will be issued by Norton in June 2009.

3rd Annual Friends of Library “LIKE NEW” Book Sale December 5 and 6

The Brooks Memorial Library Friends’ Third Annual Holiday Book Sale is scheduled for Friday, December 5, from 3 to 8 p.m. (during Gallery Walk) and on Saturday, December 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Some special items this year are: Large Print format fiction; new review copies; some brand new science fiction and fantasy in both hard and softcover; mint condition nonfiction—some signed by the author.

Most books selected for this sale are ones that would be suitable for gift giving since they are in “like-new” condition.

The Friends of Brooks Memorial Library was organized in 1990 to support the Library in providing the highest quality library service to the community by means of advocacy, public relations, and fund raising.
